Gwang-ju is famous for the'5.18 a pro-democracy movement'. The 5.18 a pro-democracy movement is Gwang-ju citizens strove for democratization against military despotic government in May,1980. Gwang-ju citizens fought the armed soldier with naked fists for the sake of justice, and in the way hundreds of people who participated in and even was innocent were killed. To remember this righteous event, we take lesson about The 5.18 a pro-democracy movement in May 18 every year. And we have various things related the movement such as a '5.18'memorial park and burial ground. Sometimes I listen to the day's situation from the village seniors who lived in those days. As well-Being trends make a boom all around the world, the taditional food culture of Korea gets an attention too. One of the best one of Korean traditional foods is Kimchi. Kimchi is one of the fire nutritious food, proudly. Kimchi is a traditional fermentation food.
From ancient days, Koreans have made Kimchi along with their main dishes. Since then, Kimchi has been regarded as a Korean traditional fermentation food.
During the proper ripening time, it will grow its excellent tastes and nutritions by mixing peculiar elements and original tastes. Kimchi is not only a good-taste food but also a nutritious food. In western countries, people use forks in eating food. In this way, in oriental countries, there are chopsticks instead. As you know, it is an essential utensil for eating. Though I don't know whether our forefathers made and used it or not, I appreciate them. It's sooo useful to pick solid ingredients in a mixture of liquid food. Such as our traditional food, Kimchi. And the study shows ,when we use chopsticks, it stimulates the brain. A pair of wood sticks work well and it's good for our brain developments. Its size is no more than pens. (Oh! a little longer than pens)


Like Texas or LA, people of Gwang-ju use Honam dialects. Actually, our country has several kinds of dialects-it is divided by 'do'(province). Kyongsang-do including Busan, accent is tough and high like Texas cause the citizens are war-like people.
On the contrary, Cheungchung-do talk brazenly. Interestingly enough, Jeju islanders use dialects which is very different from the other areas of Korea. It is so different that people from other districts can't understand it.
And, the Honam(Jeonla-do) dialects including Gwang-ju has a funny accent. It sounds like a prolonged sound. Of course, it's not true that all people use dialects. Some people hate it because they think it seems to be ignorant. But I think it's valuable and it contains important features of Korea, and it will serve as a data for a study.

We eat Song-pyun(Rice cake), Galbi(Beef rib), Jeon(Fries) and so on. And we visit our ancestors' graves. On this day, watching the full moon, people pray for their hope to the moon.

I can't talk about Gwang-ju without mentioning Mt.Mu-deung. Mu-deung means something is so great that it's impossible to rank it. Mt.Mu-deung is 1187m high and there are many magnificent rocks and valleies. Especially, Mt.Mu-deung is famous for its green tea. Green tea of Mt.Mu-deung is made from tea plants which planted in Sam-ae tea plant garden. Sam-ae tea plant garden was founded by Huh Back-ryun who was a maestro of oriental painting. After he passed away, the tea is produced and fetch a high price.


Korean education fever
With accuracy, korean parents are famous for their education fever. I think it is reasonable. Every parents wants their children to succeed. In korea, generally, to succeed means to earn lots of money,to be upper middle classes. Many parents think a desirable way to succeed is to graduate prestigeous universities and enter a large enterprise or become public officers. Needless to sat graduating from prestigeous universities requires entering prestigeous universities. To go to prestigeous universities, students have to get high grades throughout school years especially at the high school. But it's not enough to get good grades only attending the school lectures. Ironically, most tests taken at schools require more than what students learned at schools. So many students do extracurricular activities. Some are flying overseas to learn english. What matters is that it costs lots money and deepens the gap between the haves and have-nots.

Korean people eat kimchi in every meal. As this picture showing, the color of Kimchi is red and it's favor is hot. But not much spicy. You can control the amout of red pepper powder.
Koreans started to eat kimchi since 7~8C. But it was 1600 when kimchi became known to korean people. Earlier kimchi was white. They didn't wear red pepper powder. In 17C, red pepper was introduced from Portugal.
When Americans take a picture, they almost say one word in common-"Cheese!!" Likewise, Korean say "Kimchi!!!"
Kimchi is exported to the world. Maybe You can buy Kimchi and taste it at Markets.

Artistic City, Gwang-ju

Gwang-ju is very famous for its efforts to becoming an art city. Local government office here is trying to support the idea financially. And there are a lot of systems to help Gwang-ju's artistic projects. The Asia Song Festival was held in here a while ago. Although 2006 was 3rd festival, it became more skillful and its scale became much larger. Many asian singers got together and many asian people enjoy it through TV broadcating.
Japan, China, Taiwan, Singapore,Vietnam and Korea have participated in this festival. I hope more Asian countries join this Festival. And I really really hope that asia song festival can grow up to a global music festival and then invite "Britney Spears!!".

#1. Geographical facts about Gwang-ju
Gwang-ju seems to be a lonely city in Korea, because it locates at side of Korean peninsuls and far from Seoul. And Highway to Seoul is not the fastest one. I think that might be one of the reason why Gwang-ju had been developing slowly.
But Gwang-ju's climate is very good! Our city is not very much influenced from the climate, cause Gwang-ju has a mountain which locates in the city. Famous mountain 'Mudeung' which means 'doesn't have big peaks', is not a high and rough mountain. So Gwangju is well known for its nice weather among other Korean cities.

Korea is a peninsula surrounded by three sides of sea. It makes harbors developed from the past. Mountains in east are higher than those in west.
Spring in these years is not as good as before. Because from China where the west of sandstorm blows to the northern west of our country

Our capital city, Seoul is very up in the country, not in the center of Korea, so cities in the nationwide cannot be developed equally and balanced. I think that is the big problem.

Gwang Ju is the city where I live. Gwang Ju is appointed to a Cultural Capital And Gwang Ju holds many cultural events. One of them is 'Viennale' . Many artist display their works there, And many people come and enjoy them. Also, quite many schools determine to go to 'Viennale' for a school picnic. There are many artists in Gwang Ju, and some of them have their workplaces ub the street which is called ' the street of art' . There are also many galleries on that street and almost every day there is an exhibition. From last year, Gwang Ju holds 'Design Viennale' also. From a pen to a car, various kind of stuffs were displayed. So many people visited there that it was difficult to get into the place last year.
And Every fall , kimchi(Korean traditional food) festival is being held. People can buy and taste many kinds of kimchi and even they can have a real experience in making kimchi.

From Tokyo to London, The Iron silk road which can cross the Eurasia continent by connecting rail lines will be opened soon in the future. Connecting those countries by a rail line means that there will be a huge social change and influences. Especially, South and North Korea which were separated because of the war in 1950 for 50 years, can be extremely influenced at a politic side.The dispersed families may be expecting the meeting with their lost family due to opening of Iron silk road. To release it, "Gyeong Ui■East sea line connecting construction" must be the most important point. Because of its role on filling 23km long blank of the entire rail line. I think that is Why world issue of it. If Gyeong Ui rail line be connected, we can get pretty good economical benefits. Decrease of transportation cost can be an example. Also It can break the wall of economy between North■South Korea. I think people in South Korea don't really like attitude of Northern government and the action of helping North Korea by supporting several goods. And there are some opposite opinions against the rail line construction because of the possibility of unification. If they unified, Maybe Southern people will have to pay their money to save Northern economy. It is expected that the cost for the economical unification will be very huge. I think those are the reason why Southern people think like that. Considering efficiency of time and using frequency, I wonder If Gyeong Ui rail line would bring enough worth as much as investment of construction or not. It can also bring military tension because of the safety of people who take the train. And there are some arguments about huge cost for the construction and location of rail line that is being discussed by China and Russia's concerns. I think they should concede each other and supply resources and fund which are needed for the construction, And North Korea also. If they respond like before, It must be difficult to develop their industry and to entice international fund investment. It is necessary that two Koreas and all countries related to the construction should maintain wise attitude and cope the argument carefully to make their dream come true.

In turn, oil, gas and mineral prices are getting higher and higher.Among many countries, China is considered as the country doing its best to develop energy resources.For example, China has developed an oil field by constantly exploring Africa.These days, my country shows a little more progress in developing oil, and resources.Finally, we found huge oil fields by visiting Nigeria, Algeria and so on.These achievements result from present energy resource diplomacy.However, exploiting and preserving energy resources requires more attention and efforts than now.Firstly, Try to do more active diplomacy for exploiting oil fields.Secondly, Support a company related to the energy industry abroad.Thirdly, Try to develop alternative energy.We should put all our energy into searching for energy resources with resonable diplomacy and policy.

Koreans use energy like 'water'. A study of annual consumption of petroleum per head shows it clearly. The consumption of U.K is 1.32 ton. France recorded 1.49 ton, Japan recorded 2.0 ton and the record of Korea is 2.14 ton. But the natural resources in Korea are so sacred. That means Koreans must import most of fuels they use such as petroleum, coal, uranium for nuclear energy generation. Koreans can't depend on foreign natural resources forever. So Koreans need special energy plan which is different from what they did so far. Use natural energy. First, western sea of korea is famous for its range of tide. The everage is 4m and in some places, the ranges of tide are up to 7m. It means the tide can make energy and tidal energy generation is fit for korean geography. Second, in korea the rate of mountain to field is 7:3. It means difference of elevation can be used in generation. A pump lift up water to dam which is on the top of a mountain and drop the water to coulee. So the energy of position makes turbins spin and generate electricity. These two plans are only a part of the energy plans. There are so many plans and people seek to better plans. However the most important thing is this; it is important to plan energy plans but plans without saving are meaningless.

Before analyging effects of chinese economic growth and trade increase on Korea economy, I just passed up. Furthermore, I would read the papers I skipped articles about economy. Because it was very boring. So I often read articles about international situation or sports.But through this opportunity I know effects of chinese economic growth and trade increase on Korea economy. And now I concerned about economic problems such as revaluation of yuan, FTA and so on. So I have my personal opinion about FTA that I didn't know well. But above all this I realized if we don't cope with this infinitely competitive world that is changing so fast. Korea economy will be in danger. Furthermore, I hope our nation solves economic problems we are discussing properly and easily.

While I was doing this project, I was feel like I was an economist. As a highschool student, I always thought that 'economy' is too hard to understand. So this reporting activity was very difficult. Today chinese products are excellent because of inexpensive price and development of technology. In many industry part, China follow other advanced country's technique at a horrible fast. If the quality of product is same, everyone will use chinese product, probably. We have to change our existing attitude and position to cope with fast-growth of china. We have to concentrate our ability on competitive electron industrial semiconductor, mobile phone, electric home appliance, automobile, IT, BT, CT. Not only improvement of quality of product but also high grade of product is essential. Moreover, design and marketing which consider people's inclination are important. We can induce export of Korean product based on Han-ryu syndrome - such as Dae jang-gum induced sales of korean rice cooker. Also we have to prove that 'Something Korean is best in the world'.

Nowadays, korea gets crazy about Worldcup with that, there is also another social issues. That is FTA which mass media mentions almost everyday.FTA is an agreement that gets rid of an unequal trade for trading national goods equally. Now the government president Lo has the look back it FTA with US gets so fast. It is almost depended on us although the agreement has be negotiated between two countries farely. Lots of people disagree with FTA. Our government hasn't studied carefully about how this will affect our economy. We already experienced the fall of grape's farms that FTA is connected with Chile. But the solution to that is just farmers some support money. Our Korean government is just going to continue this government. In agriculture, harm will show up but in other categolies, we can have lots of benefits. However, do we Koreans have better ability than Americans!Not a lot. Today, world is depend on oil, more and more. However, resources are limited and amount used have to make our efforts to reduce oil demand.But the World Governments ignore about that, and bring bad influences. The example of these bad influences. First of all, various energy prices are increasing. Electricity, gas and district heating prices are increase. Not only oil cost but also natural resources prices are in creased. Next, alternative medicine problem : coal. Coals are deposited, all around the world. However, it is dirtier than oil. So, if we use it as alternative medicine, it will bring a serious environment problem like air pollution, weather problem, and so on. And, a rate of growth problem of the Middle East. The Middle East that an oil-producing nation shows the fastest speed that the rate of oil demand. It means that rate of economic growth is the fastest. And these nation's economic growth block up a fall in oil price. Finally, how to use oil and alternative medicine efficiently is the most important point. If we don't do that, we will lose everything that we had made.

About FTA - Eunna Kim

FTA means that abolishes a trade barrier between two nations as simplified of 'Free Trade Agreement'. So it brings tremendous influence when two nations that have the deep difference in economy conclude it. Now we are talking with USA, but we concluded an FTA agreement with Chile already. In that time many happenings appeared. And in an agreement with USA more happenings will appear. We can know that a case of Mexico. In the other hand we should conclude FTA. By the time Globalization is coming more fast, we shouldn't be a global bullying. The matter is not making conversation but the way conversation. Looking at attitude of goverment, it seems to be so fast. In fact, USA wants it more than us. So we don't need to hurry. We can claim more needs in the conversation because we have a break. A conversation with USA is going to so fast and insufficient compared to Japan. I can't understand why the government can't get enough good matter though they have many advantages. It seems to be a sense of a big power. But government should finish a sense of a big power and advance a conversation to the profitable concludes, having a break. People and private organizations should also help the government make a good conversation.

We should prepare a policy to have sufficient a power of state economy in near future by investing in overseas development and competing. Also we make an effort to develop alternative medicine. Recently we should respond timely to sudden attach of world energy flow and are necessary a great answer to consider both enviroment and economy.

Seaching for the Kyoungui rail-line, I think again the situation that the Korea Peninsula is separated during the sixty years. As you see the data before, Kyoungui rail-line will connect the South and the North Korea through rebuilding the rail-line in a demilitarized zone area which has cut since the Korean War. If Kyoungui rail-line is opened, it will benefit to economic of the south and the North Korea and it is going to be an opportunity that the Northeast-Asia grow to a strong power country including that Japan, Russia, and China. Also, opening Kyoungui rail-line is the start to the Silk-Road connecting the eurasion continent to the one. But there is several problem. One is confidence and cooperation between the South and the North Korea, the other is excessive cost. especially, many tax will be used to opening Kyoungui rail-line. Before a few day, the North Korea braked the situation. So Kyoungui rail-line faces a problem. Opening Kyoungui rail-line has importance in making military tension between the South and the North Korea relaxed rather than bringing several economical effect. Also putting trust in the North Korea is neccessary to lead the peace unification and it is essential to make a countermeasure to solve the financial problem. Opoening Kyoungui rail-line will make dream come true the crossing the eurasion continent. Therefore first, we try to have the consciousness change about the North Korea.

# Showing Respect To Elders

Culture is diffrent each country. Because many countries have diffrent history and background. For example when we have a meal, with one forenigner, He maybe suprised at the situation. In korea, when eldiest people pick up the spoon, the meal starts together. Untill he pick up the spoon, we should wait for him. It is natural situation, because it is one way to show our respect for elder people. But, view of forenigner, this situation can't understand. Perhaps they think this is unfair and don't understanding our custom. Like this, each country has traditional culture. So we can't say which one is the best culture or the worst. In other words, we must try to understand all kinds of culture.

Have you ever heard about "Korean Traditional Shamanism"?
In Korea, when a baby is born, if ti's a baby, we hang a straw festoon with many chilies, while if it's a girl, we use charoal.
It means that terrible devil who may harm to baby won't be allowed into the home. And a rolled straw festoon means that their families hope that they live longer without illness.
Long time ago, mant baby died early, so we celebrate their 100th day;the birthday party. These days, in 100th day birthday party, parents let baby pick up one thing of many things, such as money, pen, thread, and so on. Money means to become the rich, pen means to be smart, thread means to live long lifetime.
Nowadays, babies are born in hospitals, so this custom has disappeared.

In korea, when a couple married,most of them have to support man's parents for 1-2 years.For some years woman learns how to make korean food,including kimchi,do housework. Sometimes woman gets stressed about this situation,cause man's parents expect them to have grandsons in short time.It seems that to marry in korea is very tired and stressful.But there is bright side in this marriage. During the period,the emotion called 'Jung' comes from the family.'Jung' is similar to love but it has its own special aspect. Korean can feel it without words. When you in korea, you feel something Warm and soft from relationships with koreansbut you recognizes it's not love. That's korean emotion;Jung.

In Korea, young people can eat after old people start eating. For example, when my family eat together, grandparents eat first, next parents' turn, at last my turn comes. That is the expression of respect to old people.Also, Korean often share their soup without using personal bowls. This makes foreigner think that it is not sanitary. I'm not sure, but I think that it shows the sense of union. From long time ago, Korean have shared what they have with others. They have been willing to help others.
